docSTAR, an award-winning developer of web-based enterprise content management software, announced today it will be licensing the Point.io middleware platform to bring HIPAA-compliant communications and secure document sharing to the insurance industry. The Point.io platform enables organizations to share and access documents behind the firewall and in the cloud from any location on any device.

Utilizing the Point.io API, docSTAR's document management software applications will help insurance companies with HIPAA compliance by providing a secure platform to share encrypted data and documents between insurance agents, brokers, insurance carriers and other enterprise distributors. Due to a recent modification in the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules' requirements, business associates of covered entities are now directly liable for compliance with certain requirements. As health records are shared between these business associates during the insurance application and claims process, data must be controlled in order to safeguard privacy.

"With the continued advancement of HIPAA security requirements, the secure transmission of healthcare data is critical to the insurance industry," said docSTAR Vice President of Sales Greg Cooke. "By embedding Point.io's integration platform with our enterprise content management software, we are able to control the sharing of sensitive documents in any environment, from any device. This powerful technology can be utilized to protect sensitive data for other enterprise content management solutions as well -- from financial services to healthcare, education legal and government sectors."

"We are excited to work with docSTAR to not only integrate our secure document management features, but to also enable secure workflows that engage external participants through web, mobile or cloud applications. Core processes can now be externalized through a single, simple API and remain in-step with internal systems of record without the risks of exposing core systems to direct Internet traffic. Our new applications expand user choice and drive unique experiences," said Ron Rock, CEO of Point.io.

In order to ensure the security and protection of all forms of sensitive data, the Point.io platform offers centralized controls to restrict what happens to emails when they are sent, including: opening, saving, printing, downloading, forwarding, and even screen captures. The audit logging system helps entities monitor message activity including tracking when a message was opened, what action was taken, and uses expiration dates so records can no longer be accessed past a specific timeframe.
